For our first Teesdale Writers creative writing challenge, we’ve chosen the prompt Through the Window.
In writing fiction, non-fiction, memoir or poetry, any window can function as a literal and sometimes metaphorical dividing point between two worlds, situations or conditions. It might be the window of a house, office or shop, a school or church, or even the window of a moving vehicle.
Our perception changes depending on whether we’re looking in through the window, or out. Perhaps someone is able to see things or people in that different world, without being able to hear, smell, touch or take them. Does the window offer protection, or constraint? Is the view changing as time passes? Or maybe a person, animal or thing is just about to go through the window to change what’s on the other side.
You might simply describe what you can see from your window right now, or what you’d prefer to see, and what significance the view has for you, or perhaps write a memoir of something you saw through a window.
This writing challenge is entirely optional, so if you already have a project you’re working on, or you would prefer to get feedback on writing on a different topic, don’t feel you must join in. Most importantly, it’s meant to be a prompt to inspire new writing, so please don’t pull out an old story and tweak it to fit this month’s theme!
If you’re a member of Teesdale Writers, please send your Through the Window piece for feedback by the end of February. Enjoy your writing.
