My Favourite Meal: May 2026 creative writing prompt

The Teesdale Writers creative writing challenge for May is deliciously simple: My Favourite Meal.

Your response may be writing a mouth-watering description of a meal you always enjoy. Tell us what style of presentation you prefer, any key components, like a special sauce or side dish, your preferences, such as crispy bacon rather than soft, and any limitations, such as no onions. For a bit of fun, try rewriting your description to go on the menu at an over-priced and pretentious restaurant.

This topic would be yummy for a light-hearted poem, or the sensory experience of eating could create a focus for writing a memoir of childhood or travel.

If you’re writing fiction, imagine your character has been presented with their favourite meal, but they aren’t happy about it. What might be a reason for that? Is something wrong with the food, or are they concerned about the giver’s motivation? Or could it be the wrong time or place?

Our creative writing challenge is optional, so if it’s not to your taste, or you have an unfinished piece which you don’t want to leave on the side of the plate, you’re welcome to put this writing idea on the back burner for now. As long as you’re getting some writing done, it’s all good!

If you’re a member of Teesdale Writers, please send in your writing for feedback (whether on the topic of My Favourite Meal, or any other piece you prefer) by the end of May.
