A Beautiful World – by Leah Hobson

Jeremy is feeling cramped. So, when his small world is turned upside down he gets curious, prepares for adventure and discovers where bravery can lead him…

Flash fiction inspired by a felted egg and chick that my best friend and I made – she named him Jeremy and I wrote his story…

A Beautiful World

The world is getting smaller and smaller. Jeremy is feeling cramped and restless but what can he do except wiggle around, curl up and snuggle down for another cosy nap?

Jeremy startles awake – his world is rolling over and over! When it finally stops he finds himself face down with his feet kicking up behind him. His little orange toes curl up as his heels strike the curved wall… Thud-thud

Jeremy stops kicking and listens carefully. A noise is getting louder. He hears a muffled cheep-cheep. Jeremy twists around fast, stands up and bumps his round yellow head on the top of his world. He shuts his eyes, opens his little orange beak and to his surprise out comes a cheep-cheep of his own!

Scared yet fascinated, Jeremy takes a breath, stills his tiny beating heart and with all his strength, stretches out his neck and jabs at the walls with his strong, little beak. Tap-tap… the sound swirls around the hollow space.

Curiosity grows. Jeremy shuffles his feet and prepares himself for adventure…

Tap-tap.

Rest.

Tap-tap.

Rest.

Tap-CRACK!

A rush of fresh air and a piercing light invade Jeremy’s cramped yet safe world.

Determined now, Jeremy taps harder and harder as crack after crack spreads across his walls. Before long, a jagged trapdoor appears.

Jeremy bravely nudges the door with his head. His shiny black eyes wide with excitement, he peeks out, and what does he see?

A beautiful world.

A few more taps with his beak, a kick of his feet and a firm nudge of his head and Jeremy the fluffy, yellow chick tumbles out of his egg…

The end.
