A Foolish Game: Apr 2026 creative writing prompt

Today is April Fools’ Day, so here’s our Teesdale Writers creative writing challenge for April – A Foolish Game.

Did you fool anyone this year, or get tricked yourself?

While April-fooling someone could inspire a personal memoir or be the basis of a good short story, it’s not the only aspect of the prompt. You may prefer to write about a silly or dangerous game played by children or teenagers, or what about another game, which other people may think foolish, but you love? Alternatively, perhaps create a persuasive piece, arguing that a certain activity is something you’ve realised is a mug’s game – beach holidays? cleaning your windows? owning a pet?

This is ‘jester’ fun writing challenge, so don’t feel like a fool if you can’t come up with anything to say about it. All new writing is good, so if you’re already making progress on another project, don’t let this challenge mean it’s Game Over for your other work.

If you’re a member of Teesdale Writers, please send in your creative writing to be circulated for feedback (whether on the topic of A Foolish Game, or any other piece you prefer) by the end of April. No fooling!
