Not for kids – The Whim of Water – by Leah Hobson

Leah’s latest short story blends a local historical murder with the folklore creature Peg Powler, the grindylow living in the River Tees.

The Whim of Water is an unsettling tale of unwanted attentions, murder and an eerie encounter. It could be described as speculative fiction; a splash of horror, a swirl of history and a ripple of fantasy.

Leah and her husband first heard of the 1800s murder after trying to read an old memorial in Startforth’s graveyard situated on the other side of the river from their home in Barnard Castle. They searched the internet and found that the mystery had been retold many times over the years in local newspapers. The horrible and sad events left an impression on them. Leah hopes that the dead won’t mind her reimagining of that night.

“I’ve always enjoyed creating workbooks for my clients but I’m new to creative writing and illustration. I’ve published two short fables, one about a cat and one about a mouse. These books have a message for all who are anxious or fearful and mostly sell as gifts for children but my mind is always full of ideas and this latest story is definitely not a bedtime story for kids.”

Quote from the book… “The soft bed of snow gave no relief, it only served to muffle her screams and soak up her blood.”

The story takes place on New Years Eve so to find out this winter ‘who survives the night’ download The Whim of Water by Leah Hobson for just £1.99 on Kindle Edition eBook.
